I decided to become a dermatologist because of the need for doctors who specialize in managing skin and hair conditions that affect people who have black and brown skin. I provide comprehensive care to adults. I manage different types of hair loss, including central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, which destroys hair follicles and causes scarring. This condition can lead to permanent hair loss on the crown, the top part of the scalp. I also care for people who have traction alopecia, which is caused by hairstyles that tightly pull hair.

Dr. Oma Agbai is a Board-Certified Dermatologist, Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology and Director of Multicultural Dermatology and Hair Loss Disorders at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree at Emory University, obtained her Doctorate of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, and completed her Internal Medicine internship at Pennsylvania Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She served as the C.S. Livingood Clinical Research Fellow in Dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital, followed by Dermatology residency at the University of California, Davis.

Dr. Crystal Aguh is an Associate Professor of Dermatology and Director of the Ethnic Skin Program at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr Aguh’s area of research focuses primarily on skin conditions that disproportionately impact minority populations, with particular emphasis on scarring hair loss and hair care practices. She has authored two books on hair loss and has published over two dozen peer-reviewed journal articles and given multiple national and international talks on these topics. Dr. Aguh completed her residency at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, serving as the chief resident in her final year training.

Adekemi Akingboye, M.D. is a board-certified dermatologist. She joined Sona Dermatology after seven years practicing dermatology. Dr. Akingboye received her Bachelor of Science degree from State University of New York Stony Brook and her medical degree from SUNY Downstate. She completed her internship at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York, NY and her residency at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. She received a faculty appointment in the Department of Dermatology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY where she worked seeing patients and teaching.

My goal as a physician is to create a safe and mutually respectful relationship with every patient, so that I can do my part to improve his or her overall health. I welcome patients with a variety of skin concerns including special concerns of transgender people and people with skin of color, as well as genital dermatology.

Andrew F. Alexis, MD, MPH is the Vice-Chair for Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Dermatology and Professor of Clinical Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He is the former Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West. Having served as Director of the first-of-its-kind Skin of Color Center for over 15 years, his work has helped to advance patient care, research, and education pertaining to dermatologic disorders that are prevalent in populations with skin of color.

Shimika Barrolle, DNP, FNP-C is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice with a concentration in Population Health degree at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. After receiving her graduate degree, she completed a 2-year Post Graduate Training Program in Dermatology. Shimika is a highly knowledgeable and empathetic provider. She is passionate about providing high quality care.

Nashida Beckett, M.D. is a board certified dermatologist. She joined Sona Dermatology after 7 years in private practice in the Washington D.C. area. Dr. Beckett received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University and a Master’s degree in Public Health from George Washington University. She received her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine and performed her internship in internal medicine at Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Beckett completed her dermatology residency at Howard University Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident. Dr. Beckett has been published in professional journals and has presented at numerous national and regional dermatology meetings. She is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. She has also spent time treating patients abroad in Botswana through the University of Pennsylvania-Botswana Partnership. Dr. Beckett enjoys practicing general dermatology and treating patients of all ages and skin types. Her special interests include dermatologic surgery and cosmetic dermatology. She believes in the importance of building strong relationships with her patients in order to provide the best care possible.
